We arrived in Melbourne late last night, and after a slight detour in the wrong direction we managed to check into the grungy hostel that will be our home until we can find somewhere more perminant. An important step we were soon to discover, there is very little you can do without an address.
Our first meeting today was with the Bank, and we managed to get a current account set up, as well as discuss our general saving options. This took longer than we hoped, and after the bank we headed to the Australian Tax Office so that I could apply for a tax office number, and B could try and revive his. This again took a lot longer than we were hoping for and so it was already quite late by the time we got to look for an estate agent.
We got to about 5 estate agents before they shut in the Carlton, Fitzroy and Brunswick areas, but after all that, there is still very few that are suitable for what we are looking for. Either they are too expensive, too small, wont be available until too late, to far away from any public transport or just to like an appartment for B to cope with. So we are reduced to a choice of two viewings tomorrow with two more to call about that we found on a website.
All this traversing about was possible thanks to the purchase of a MYKI card at the start of the day, a new way of paying for public transport in Melbourne a little like the London Oyster card.
In between all this I managed to drop my CV into a couple of pharmacies and B has got a pay-as-you-go sim for his phone (we can't get a contract until we have an address).
Who knows, by tomorrow we may have a house. Then again we may have to endure another week in this hostel.
